Well water in the Sebago lakes region
A camp that becomes a house keeps its well, and that well has usually never seen a lab. Around Windham, Standish, Raymond, Naples, and Bridgton, the lakes region's oldest housing story is exactly that conversion: seasonal places winterized into year-round homes, wells and all. Sebago Lake itself supplies the Portland Water District and roughly one in six Maine residents (Portland Water District), but the homes ringing the lakes mostly drink from private wells, and a private well's history is whatever the owner can document.
The region's groundwater comes in two distinct forms. The Maine Geological Survey has mapped significant sand and gravel aquifers across this area, including the North Windham quadrangle (MGS Open-File Map 98-158); MGS classifies a deposit as a significant aquifer when a well in it can be pumped continuously at 10 gallons per minute or more (Maine Geological Survey). Homes off those glacial deposits drill into fractured bedrock instead.
Why the well type changes the worry list
Sandy-aquifer wells yield well and tend to run lower on bedrock contaminants, but their permeable ground is more open to surface sources: septic systems, road salt, fertilizer. Bedrock wells flip the profile, carrying more of Maine's naturally occurring arsenic, uranium, and radon risk; statewide, about one in 10 wells exceeds the 10 ug/L arsenic standard per USGS. Either way the answer is the same lab order.
